  • Cyclone Jokwe made landfall in Mogincual District in coastal Nampula Province on March 8, 2008, affecting southeastern Nampula and northeastern Zambézia provinces, and causing widespread destruction to housing, infrastructure, and crops, and causing at least nine deaths.

  • Due to Cyclone Jokwe, some 200,000 people in the affected provinces have had their houses, crops, or means of livelihood damaged or destroyed. Households in the areas affected by the cyclone are likely to face acute food shortages.

  • Agricultural production in southern Mozambique is varied. Crops planted in October did well and November plantings have survived, although with reduced crop yields, while the December/January plantings have been severely affected by the January/February dry spell and high temperatures.

  • Elsewhere, it is anticipated that the overall crop production will be near to above average.  Ministry of Agriculture authorities are planning an agricultural season evaluation, to quantitatively estimate this year’s production.

  • The availability of crops harvested in February is pushing prices down; a trend that is expected to continue from March onward.
